Hello Thursday!

Welcome to #whimsicalwednesday…a day late! Things happen. And nothing was on schedule this week…literally nothing. So, thank you for your patience. I think today’s stitch is worth the wait.

The stitched sample is from FOWS (friend of whimsicalstitch), Emily’s Stitchery, in Northbrook, Illinois. The fact that it includes RBG is just icing on the already delicious cake. I love the contrast of the more complex background with the classic basketweave for RBG. For the record, I’m all about basketweave for all faces (regardless of species), so this hits the sweet spot for me.

I’m looking forward to using this stitch for my own project with a solid green silk floss (black lines) and a contrasting overdyed silk floss (turquoise lines). I’m thinking perhaps yellow or orange for a field of faux flowers or vegetables. You can create gorgeous clothing with a Petite Very Velvet (black lines) and a Kreinik Metallic (turquoise lines). And, as Emily has illustrated, it will make a very interesting background with just a single thread.

A Note about Diagrams
I use color in diagrams to make them as clear as possible.  The primary function of different colored lines is to illustrate a stitch sequence.  For example, layering of colors demonstrates you add them in that order.  They can also provide ideas on how to integrate additional threads (one line for each color).  Or, you can use the same thread for all color lines.  That's where I encourage you to use your imagination for the space you are stitching!

It's an Extravaganza

It’s an extravaganza of straight and oblique layers…in pink! ::Swoon::

The stitched sample uses two plies of Impressions (black lines) and Neon Rays (aqua lines). The layering of the aqua lines plays a critical role in the final look. The black edges of those lines will help you navigate those layers. (Note: This is the last stitch I’ll be sharing from the pink, red, and white sampler.)

I’m looking forward to using this stitch again for a pretty skirt with silk floss and Petite Silk Lame. Flip it 90° for some stunning slacks for Santa with Petite Very Velvet (black lines) and an appropriately sized Kreinik (size 8 for 18 mesh and size 12 for 13 mesh). I also think it would be very intriguing as a tree you want to draw attention to. Use an overdyed floss or wool for the black lines and a solid wool or matte for the aqua lines. Consider using two shade of the same thread as well.

Dr. No

No, as in I need a break from the past two weeks of a lot of red. (Don’t get me wrong. I love red. But my Instagram page needs a break from red.) So this white beauty is a palette cleanser, if you will. It’s from the same sampler of the past few weeks, designed by one of my favorite stitchers.

The stitched sample is Neon Rays (black lines) and Fyre Werks (aqua lines), and Sundance Beads (yellow circles with black lines) on 13M. Truth be told, this is among my favorite stitches from this sampler.

Vickie picked the perfect threads for this stitch as the smoothness of the Neon Rays plays perfectly against the rough brightness of the Fyre Werks. I love the tiny pop of light pink against the very bright white. All in all, a perfect thread combo. (I could have done a better job of attaching the beads but that’s another story.)

This stitch will be perfect on a Santa’s bag or coat with silk floss (black lines) and a matching overdyed silk floss (aqua lines) with the appropriate beads. I would love to see this as a vase with contrasting colors and finishes. For example, a blue floss (black lines) with a white metallic (aqua lines) and silver beads.

A little tangent on today’s blog post title. I was desperately searching for mindless binging, as I feel I’ve watched virtually everything. A friend told me she was going through all of the James Bond movies. I started that fun project last night. The downside is Dr. No is so bad it’s funny. The upside is Sean Connery.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Subtitle: More Red. So, yes, I wish I had planned the sequence of stitched samples better but this dramatic stitch is something to behold.

The stitched sample is Petite Very Velvet (black lines) and Fyre Werks (yellow lines) on 13M. It’s part of the same sampler I’ve shared for the past two weeks.

It’s another full coverage and diagonal stitch and its name reflects a bit of what it felt like creating the diagram. The reason I bring this up is that challenge made me change my mind on the sequence. Since they are a continuous path, I recommend stitching the yellow lines first. It will be much easier to fill in the remaining canvas with the second thread.

I would love to see this as snow on the side of a mountain with lighter weight threads, such as Petite Silk Lame (yellow lines) and Flair (black lines). Flip it 90° for a tall area, such as pants or a long coat. I would use Vineyard Silk (yellow lines) and a Kreinik Metallic.

The stitched sample is two strands of Impressions (black lines) and Shimmer Ribbon (turquoise lines) on 13M. It’s part of the same sampler I shared with you last week.

Your eyes are not deceiving you…it is a full coverage and diagonal stitch. Oddly enough, what draws me to this stitch are the single tent stitches in between the 3X3 squares (turquoise lines with the Shimmer Ribbon). It adds a tiny element of surprise AND opens up a different pattern for the Impressions (black lines). I look forward to using this stitch for a jacket with Vineyard Silk and a Kreinik Metallic. It will also work well for a roof with two shades of Rainbow Linen or Vineyard Silk.

If you want to glam it up a tiny bit, consider replacing those single tent stitches I mentioned earlier with a seed bead or a Cross Stitch with a different metallic.

Whole Lotta Pink

Today’s stitch is from the wayback stitching machine, aka early aughts, and a whole lotta pink.

The stitched sample is Impressions (aqua lines), Petite Frosty Rays (gray lines), and Neon Rays (yellow lines). It’s from a class taught by one of my favorite former shop girls (who is now a full-time+ mom of three adorable boys).

This stitch is from a heart sampler and is full of red, pink, and white. (So it’s highly likely you’ll be seeing more red and pink soon.) I love how the oblique angle of the stitches, combined with the use of contrasting finishes in the main repeated stitch elements, adds an element of surprise. I’ve used this stitch for a skirt with black Petite Very Velvet (for the aqua and gray lines) and multiple Kreinik Metallics for the yellow lines. A blouse or dress would be really pretty with more lightweight threads, such as Soie Cristale (aqua lines), Petite Silk Lame (gray lines) and Flair (yellow lines).

If you want to lighten it up a bit, consider a single bead or bugle bead (on the horizontal) in lieu of the yellow lines. Taking that one step further, consider a string of three beads in two colors across the open space (on the horizontal).

The first stitch is a Milanese Variation. It’s a stitch I’ve had my eye on for a while. Most of the versions I’ve seen start with a straight stitch over one row and scaling up to seven rows. I like this one better for two reasons. The first is that the smallest stitch over two rows doesn’t disappear (as straight stitches over one row can do) and I really like how the stitcher did ALL of the stitches over two rows in a different thread.

The stitched sample is from the same project as last week and uses Finca Presencia (black lines) and Kreinik (aqua lines) on 18-mesh. Flip the stitch 90° and this stitch will serve you very well as water with two shades of Petite Silk Lame or two shades of size 8 Kreinik (on 18-mesh). Or use either of those threads for the black lines and use Flair for the aqua lines. I love how light colored Flair absorbs the color of the canvas underneath, thereby slightly altering its own color. It’s a really cool effect.

I love the oblique diamonds that pop out at you on the LInked Panels stitch. The fact they are nothing more than elongated X’s makes it even more fun and the counting is easier. The stitched sample uses Presencia Finca Perle Cotton (black lines) and Petite Silk Lame (aqua lines) on 18M.

This full coverage stitch will work well as clothing with a wool for the black lines and either a second shade of wool or a lightweight metallic or the aqua lines. It will serve. you well for many interior design elements, such as a tablecloth, wallpaper, or floor. Silk floss (black lines) and Bijoux (aqua lines) will make swoon-worthy wallpaper. Single strand silk with a Flair or Kreinik will. make a really pretty outdoor field.

The stitched sample is Finca Prescencia and Kreinik on 18-mesh.

It’s a perfect stitch for a sampler (as illustrated). With those pairs of vertical stitches over six rows, this stitch screams clothing to me, especially pants. I would love to see said pants with a Petite Very Velvet and Flair. Flip it 90° and you have a lovely green field. I would use an overdyed silk floss for the black lines and a solid silk floss for the yellow lines in that scenario.

I Love (Most) Surprises

Today’s stitch is a clever combination of straight stitches that honestly surprised me. And I absolutely love it.

The stitched sample uses Elegance (black lines) and size 8 Kreinik (yellow lines) on 18M. This stitch is reminiscent of a very clever way the one and only Brenda Hart uses open stitches. She stitched an intricately detailed piece with a single stitch and one type of thread. Brilliant. (Here’s an example if you are thinking “What the heck is she talking about?”)

This stitch is perfect for many architectural or home elements, such as wallpaper, rug, tile, or roof. For example, using two different matte textures, such as an overdyed wool and a solid silk for a rug, will add interesting dimension. Alternating black and white threads for a tile floor will be gorgeous. I would love to see it as a background for a smaller area, such as an ornament or small standup. (The stitched sample is just that, a background of a smaller area for a Stitch Guide I’m working on right now.) It will be a great addition to any sampler and, circling back to my original impression, a lovely cover for an intricately painted piece.

Smile!

Today’s stitch has lots of beads and makes me smile.  It also happens to be from one of my favorite projects and stitcher/designers, Plum Stitchery. It’s one of the adorable ornaments from Twelvetide. It makes me smile…a lot.

The stitched sample is two plies of white Needlepoint Inc. Silk (black lines) and white and blue Sundance beads (yellow and blue circles, respectively) with clear beading thread on 18M.

My learned advice on this stitch, and with all leaf stitches in general, is to stitch them from the outer edge to the shared hole. This will reduce wear and tear on the threads and make the process so much easier. In addition, stitch the mirrored stitches sequentially (from side to side) so the layering matches on both sides. (See sequence in the lower left-hand corner of the diagram).

This is rapidly becoming my new go-to stitch for trees and birds. More often than not, I use silk flosses (solid or overdyed), as that helps me manage the potential heaviness of the stitch. As I mentioned, the stitched sample on 18M uses two plies; I would use a minimum of three plies on 13M. If you want a more dramatic look (read heavier), consider a single strand Perle cotton, Elegance, Grandeur, or Trebizond Silk. If you want to minimize the bead, feel free to use a single bead. In that case, I would use a bead slightly larger than the canvas typically calls for. Specifically, I would use a size 11 bead on 18M and a size 8 bead on a 13M canvas. If you want to add more sass, consider an appropriately sized bugle bead or even add a Boho bead to the mix.

A Note about Diagrams
I use color in diagrams to make them as clear as possible.  The primary function of different colored lines is to illustrate a stitch sequence.  For example, the layering of colors demonstrates you add them in that order.  They can also provide ideas on how to integrate additional threads (one line for each color).  Or, you can use the same thread for all color lines.  That's where I encourage you to use your imagination for the space you are stitching!
