Today’s stitch comes from one of the first Stitch Concepts I put together, Tiny Town by Este MacLeod. It was fun to revisit the guide recently and more fun to find a cute stitch buried in the guide to share with you.

The stitched sample is me playing on 18M canvas with Planet Earth overdyed silk floss (black lines) and Trebizond Silk (aqua lines).

I used this stitch for one of the (many) roofs in the Tiny Town project and recommended Rainbow Gallery’s Capri for the thread (all lines). This stitch will be great for an open field with Vineyard Silk (black lines) and a second shade of Vineyard Silk (aqua lines). I’m looking forward to using it for a jacket Petite Very Velvet (black lines) and a Kreinik Metallic (aqua lines).

It happens almost every time. I’m on a roll. I’m focusing. I’m doing my thing. And a stitch idea that has nothing to do with what I’m working on pops in my head. Fun fact. I am not good at and I loathe hand drawing stitches. So, everything gets put aside so I can get the stitch on my version of paper…software. And that is exactly what happened Sunday afternoon and here we are.

The stitch is nothing more than incomplete diamonds on top of each other and I absolutely love the effect. I find it fascinating in any direction…up, down, or sideways…which means there are oodles of possibilities for this stitch. Having stitched it both ways, I share this stitch is much more interesting with a minimum of two threads as it enhances the faux layered look. The stitched sample is me playing with pink Trebizond Silk and blue Petite Silk Lame.

This will be a table runner in an upcoming Stitch Concept, using Soie D’Alger and Petite Silk Lame. It will also make fascinating fish scales with an overdyed metallic paired with a solid metallic. And, last but not least, it will make a great roof…perhaps one with Santa getting ready to climb down the chimney. Depending on the locale, it would be fun with white metallics or good old brown and tan solid wools.

A Wing & A Prayer

You have no clue a. what a great pun that is and b. how lucky I am for students who stitch fast and well.

It’s a great pun because today’s stitch is from an outrageous orange bird on Este MacLeod’s Summer Birds (distributed through Melissa Shirley Designs). In addition, if I hadn’t had this photo (from said student who stitches fast and well), we may not have had a blog post today. I have a guardian angel who stitches! (Truth be told, I have a few. And I am very grateful).

The stitched sample uses Petite Very Velvet (light gray lines), Trebizond Silk (black lines), Gloriana Floss (aqua lines), and Bead Dazzle Beads (turquoise circles). It’s a purposefully dramatic stitch to draw attention to this gorgeous bird in the left corner of the canvas.

Consider this stitch for a dramatic coat, bag, or blanket with a Kreinik 1/16” ribbon for the gray lines, Vineyard Silk or silk floss for the black lines, and a contrasting metallic in a smaller size (like a Petite Silk Lame or size 8 Kreinik) for the aqua lines. Finish it off with a bead and, voila!, perfection. I would love to see this with contrasting colors in any combination. I have another version of this diagram without the bead that I’ll share in the upcoming weeks. It’s a slightly more modest version of this that illustrates the interest that even more layering adds. (Ooooh, I hope that builds some sort of intrigue).

A Classic

There might be few things more holiday classic than deep red poinsettias sprinkled with snow. Even I, a 4th generation (snow-less) Californian, know how classic this is. And voila!

Today’s #stitchingsunday is Alternating Nobuko from my Debbie Mumm Poinsettia Stitch Guide. It uses two shades of Splendor and Trebizond Silk. I used to avoid Nobuko as it frequently vexed me. (Okay, and made me swear, I confess.) It clicked for me when I saw the stitch as vertical columns of diagonal stitches over three rows, skipping a row in between. That may seem obvious to some, but it is what got me over the hump with this stitch. I now love it. There are so many wonderful variations that can really pop on a piece.

Large and in Charge

It's always fun to see how the same base stitch looks with different fills. Today's stitch is a distant cousin of one of the early #whimsicalwednesdays. Today's stitch is the "just right" between full and empty in the center. Truth be told, all choices are great.

The common denominator between the two versions is the double diamond (with stitches over five rows on all sides).

Today's stitched sample is from a large floral. As you can see, it draws attention to the beautiful shading. It uses Trebizond Silk (turquoise lines), Kreinik Metallics Fine Braid (#8) (dark gray lines), and a Sundance size 11 bead (aqua circle). I chose lighter threads with an open stitch to draw attention to the shading yet still offer an interesting pattern in the larger area.

As mentioned in the first post, I love these large diamonds as background stitches. They add visual interest, yet are subtle. For backgrounds, I like to use a Perle cotton, such as DMC or Prescencia Perle Cotton size 8 on 18-mesh and size 5 on 13-mesh. More often than not, I add a Smyrna Cross in a subtle metallic to the 2X2 intersection and then play with the inside of the diamond with some sort of metallic.

I Can't Wait to Show You the Wrong One!

A funny thing happened on the way to creating today's diagram. I got it way wrong. I would have kept going down that path...because it was pretty fantastic...were it not for the already stitched sample. I promise to share my mistake once I'm able to stitch it up. In the interim, please enjoy today's stitch.

The stitched sample uses Trebizond Silk (light gray lines), Kreinik Metallics Fine Braid (#8) (turquoise lines), and Flair (dark gray lines) on 18-mesh. Continuing the theme from last week, this is another fantastic open stitch to highlight some of our industry's most beautiful painting.

This stitch could be very intriguing as water, as the Upright Crosses could add a little choppiness to said water. I would play with Petite Silk Lame, Kreinik, and maybe some Soie D'Alger or Princess Perle. Stitches like these lend themselves to dramatic clothing. Very Velvet or any single strand silk would add a richness in color and weight that would make this stand out even more. The center X would be great with Entice or Fyre Werks. I would replace the Upright Cross that is in the center of the diamonds with a bead in that scenario.

So Many Variations, So Little Time

Order the Profiteroles

I finally assembled today's blog at 11:00 last night. Why? Because I ordered the profiteroles at dinner last week instead of scampering home and writing the blog. I regret it...kinda. The good news is you have your stitch, I had my profiteroles (my all-time favorite dessert) with the one and only Ginabean, and it's a holiday today! Let's celebrate all of the above with a super fun tramme stitch.

The stitched sample uses Elegance (dark gray lines), Trebizond Silk (turquoise lines), and Kreinik Metallics Fine Braid (#8) on 18-mesh. It's a wonderful tone on tone combo that highlights the beautiful shading of the flowers.

This stitch would be even more dramatic with different colors and/or finishes. I would love to see it as a roof with Very Velvet, Silk Straw, and maybe some Fine Kid (by & more threads). Another idea is for a coat or bag with Sparkle Rays for the base thread (dark gray line) with Soie D'Alger (turquoise lines) and a dramatic Kreinik Metallic for the center accent stitch (the aqua line). I'm thinking a Kreinik holographic threads (indicated by an L after the color number) would be perfect. They are a wonderful burst of even more color than the "typical" Kreinik.

It Takes a Village

It's been a little nutty around here for the last few weeks, so I counted on my village of stitcher friends to get me through. Today's stitch is inspired by a project a friend shared with me a couple years ago. I've included it on many personal and student projects. It's easy, versatile, and well-behaved.

I say well-behaved because this stitch just adapts to whatever area you put it in. The example above is from a Santa coat, using Vineyard Silk and Shimmer Ribbon. I've used or recommended it for snowmen with Crystal Braid (gray lines) and Flair (aqua lines), fruit with Soie D'Alger (gray lines) and Trebizond Silk (aqua lines), and backgrounds with Perle Cotton (gray lines ) and Kreinik Metallic (aqua lines). And they all worked.

You could reduce the texture of the 2X2 square by replacing the Smryna Cross with four tent stitches or a 2X2 Mosaic stitch. That combination makes me want to try it for a tabletop, a floor, or even a field of grass. There are a lot of ways to play with this stitch.

Sometimes Being Right Isn't Everything

And that's because today's stitch comes from another mistake! The diagram below was my first attempt at diagramming this adorable window stitch, it wasn't quite right. It wasn't right because it didn't match the stitched sample, but it's still a cute stitch on its own merits. So meet the Patterned Cross Stitch's cousin, the Patterned Cross Stitch!

My counsel for this version is the same as the cousin. Use it to help an area recede, such as a sky or a horizon behind a beautiful landscape, or to let how the canvas is painted standout. The pink area of this canvas was so cute that I didn't want to overdo it. It's also a foolproof way to highlight shading in a small area. A stitch like this is always top of mind for water or windows. I recommend using lightweight threads with a stitch this gentle. For example, the stitched sample uses Trebizond Silk on 18-mesh. Depending on what you are stitching, consider Petite Silk Lame, Silk Straw, 2-3 strands of your favorite silk floss or wool.
