The stitched sample is a curtain from my new Stitch Concept for Whimsy Stork (from Colors of Praise). It uses two plies of Needlepoint Inc. Silk (black lines) and Petite Silk Lame (turquoise lines).

I selected this stitch for a curtain due to its overt diagonal direction for a curtain. It will make a wonderful body of water with a lightweight Sparkle Braid (black lines) and an overdyed Kreinik Metallic (turquoise lines). I’m looking forward to seeing it as a large tree trunk with Rainbow Linen and Gloriana’s Lorikeet. You may want to consider adding another row or two in between the diagonal trios for a more open look.

A Note about Diagrams
I use color in diagrams to make them as clear as possible.  The primary function of different colored lines is to illustrate a stitch sequence.  For example, layering of colors demonstrates you add them in that order.  They can also provide ideas on how to integrate additional threads (one line for each color).  Or, you can use the same thread for all color lines.  That's where I encourage you to use your imagination for the space you are stitching!

Right in Front of Me the Entire Time

Today’s stitch is from FOWS (friend of whimsicalstitch.com) Ruth Schmuff. When I first saw this stitch, it was a literal head slap moment (aka a swear word). I have to confess to the swear word because there was a witness. Possibly witnesses…I’ll never say.

The straight lines are a darning stitch. A darning stitch is stitched as a running stitch resulting in smooth edges between stitches (instead of crisp wrapped edges). A stitched sample of a generic darning stitch is here.

The stitched sample for today’s uses Petite Silk Lame (black lines) and one ply of Needlepoint Inc Silk (aqua lines). Since the Needlepoint Inc Silk is such a light touch, I zoomed in on today’s stitched sample to help illustrate this. For a photo with more context, visit here. (And, for the full kit, visit here.)

My head slap moment was the Cross Stitch covering the darning stitch. It’s such a cute touch on top of an already interesting stitch. By using a lightweight thread, the darning stitch is still obvious to me. Truth be told, you could stitch the pairs of straight stitches as traditional wrapped pairs. But I do love how the smooth edges of the darning pairs flow into the Oblique Cross Stitches.

It is highly likely* upcoming Stitch Concepts will include this stitch on floors or roofs (with Elegance for the black lines and Petite Silk Lame for the aqua lines). Vineyard Silk (black lines) coupled with Fyre Werks (aqua lines) will make great clothing. As I stare at the stitched sample, I want to play with this for water with Petite Silk Lame and Bijoux.

* Highly likely? Hah! Try a certainty.

It's a Three-Fer!

I had a lot of fun with a recent Stitch Concept (that will be posted on the web site very soon) because I was bound and determined to find unique things to do in the too many to count bands and borders (wide and not always very tall) that wasn’t a Satin Stitch. I think I did better than all right.

Starting clockwise from upper left, we have a border six rows tall (Large Diamond Composite), seven rows tall (Split Offset Stripes), and three rows tall (Herringbone over 3), and the ubiquitous stitched samples. The stitched samples are (from the top) over six, seven, and three rows (at the bottom). The over six sample uses Petite Silk Lame (black lines) and Needlepoint Inc Silk Floss (aqua liens). The center stitched sample uses two shades of Petite Sparkle Rays. The bottom stitched sample uses Neon Rays. (All are from the same project on 18-mesh).

All of these stitches are scaleable, though the diamond stitch will work best on borders with an even-numbered height. The student was really happy with the Neon Rays for the Herringbone because it was so smooth and filled the area well. My personal favorite was the offset stripes. It mimicked the canvas painting (always a win) but what I really liked about it was the contrasting colors. I would do this again the minute an opportunity presents itself.

Procrastination Squared

I need to rip out a section on a current needlepoint project. Naturally, the solution is to post the blog I intended to post last Sunday. I am confident my kitchen cabinet will be reorganized before I finish ripping out the stitching. Okay, before I even start.

A stitching friend shared this stitch (without the beads) with me a while ago. I immediately forgot about it (#middleagedbrain) and went on my merry way. While looking for a small stitch for a wing, I stumbled across it in my photo stream, added some beads, and voila!

The stitched sample comes from Joanna at the Plum Stitchery. It’s from 4 Colly Birds, part of the Twelvetide Club hosted by the Wool & the Willow in Cleveland Heights. It uses two plies of Needlepoint Inc. silk floss and a size 14 Sundance Bead (on 18-mesh).

This stitch would be perfect for water with a lightweight metallic (Kreinik size 4 or size 8, ThreadWorx size 4 or size 8, Petite Silk Lame, or Flair) and a seed bead. (Great seed bead resources include Bead Dazzle, Caravan Beads, Sundance Designs, or S&J Designs.) This stitch will make an adorable jacket for an elf or a doll dress with Petite Very Velvet and a size 11 seed bead. Consider alternating matte and metallic threads by horizontal row. A suggested thread combo is 4 plies of silk floss for the matte with Silk Lame (18-count) for the metallic with a seed bead or a Swarovski round crystal for the bead accent.

Why 4-ply when you used 2-ply in the stitched sample? It’s all a matter of taste, the thread combos, and what your are trying to accomplish. I used two plies for the birds because I wanted the shading on the chest to show through. I recommended four plies for the alternating example because I needed the weight of the matte thread to be similar to the weight of the metallic thread. Otherwise, the metallic thread would overpower the area.

Technically, today is a two-fer as you can eliminate the beads for a more straightforward small space stitch. You could also add two small beads in each intersection for a truly glamorous stitch. (Stitch diagrams are never truly to scale, so please trust me that this will work.) You could also add the beads over three holes, instead of two as illustrated, for even more possibilities.
